Irena Mihailova portrays a dark period of state oppression in which minorities such us Turkish and Roma experienced practicies that profoundly marked their collective memory and identity. Irena described that people were forbidden to speak Turkish in public. Women were not allowed to wear traditional clothing such as shalvari. Headscarves were banned. Customs were forbidden. Religious holidays could not be celebrated openly. Even circumcision of male children was prohibited
